General Assistance Information
The Minnesota Department of Commerce, which provides consumers with protections and enforces insurance laws for the State of Minnesota, offers Minnesotans guidance on steps to take when filing an insurance claim after storms damage their home, business or other property from the storms and flooding that has occurred in the past 48 hours. Please share this information to your community: Minnesota Department of Commerce Disaster Information Center.
Key tips for filing insurance claims for your property:
- Contact your insurance company immediately.
- Wait for the company’s adjuster before you or anyone starts working to remove or repair or replace property.
- Inventory your damage.
- Take notes of who you talk with and what they say from your insurance company, adjusters or repair services. Note dates, names and contact information.
- Avoid scammers or high-pressure sales tactics if you are contacted by someone you don’t know, such as salespeople going door-to-door in areas hit by storms.

Hospitality Operators - Complete Our Summer 2024 Flooding Survey
We want to hear from you: Hospitality Minnesota has created the Summer 2024 Flooding Survey to learn more about the challenges our members are facing. This short survey aims to better inform us on how to best support you as summer flooding impacts your communities and business operations.
Why it matters: As the state considers providing aid for those impacted by recent flooding, we will share the impacts with elected officials and work to get hospitality operators the support they need.
State and Federal Response to Recent Flooding
Governor’s Response: At this morning’s press conference, Governor Tim Walz today declared a peacetime emergency, authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to be available to provide support for emergency flood operations as areas across the state experience extreme flood conditions.
- The Minnesota National Guard is in close communication with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management team to support communities across the state. … The state has received a request for National Guard assistance from the Le Sueur County Sheriff for logistics and operations support.”
Federal Response: Senator Amy Klobuchar offered the following statement in a press release on Friday, June 21: “I’m working closely with officials throughout the state as we continue to see rising flood waters cause damage and threaten the safety of Minnesotans. All public infrastructure damage is being documented so that if and when the federal threshold for FEMA disaster relief is reached, that relief will be delivered quickly.”
